For most streamers, that's one of four things.

1. Phones



The SIM and data plan already on your phone. This covers you at home, and it can cover you traveling internationally too.

  • Pros:

      • You already have one. A domestic physical SIM typically runs $10 to $30. Internationally, a physical SIM typically runs $3 to $10, cheaper than at home.

      • You don't always need a physical SIM. Many phones and carriers now support eSIM, a digital SIM profile you activate without inserting a card.

      • Some phones can hold several eSIM profiles at once, which means you can switch carriers when one drops out.

      • You can buy as much data as you need, whenever you need it. A $10 plan can get you around 2GB, enough for roughly 40 to 60 minutes of livestreaming. A $80 plan can get you 100GB, enough for 30+ hours.

      • Mobile infrastructure is everywhere. You can buy a SIM card with data at almost any airport, seaport, or land border, and increasingly through an eSIM before you even land. A prepaid data plan internationally runs $10 to $30 a month, usually for 10GB to 30GB of data, depending on the country.

      • If you don't want a new SIM, you can roam. Roaming charges scale with how much data you use, and can run into hundreds of dollars without a plan. Most carriers now sell dedicated roaming packages instead, running $10 to $40 for a week of data.

  • Cons:

    • You need to be in a coverage area to stream. That means it doesn't work well in rural or remote areas, where cell towers are sparse or nonexistent. This option is really built for cities and towns, not the backcountry.

Pro tip: Keep a SIM key with you. Also, every carrier needs a PIN to activate the SIM. Write the PIN down before you toss the package, because that's usually where it is.

2. MiFi hotspot modems

A pocket-sized device, about the size of a deck of cards and weighing 8 to 16 ounces, with its own SIM card. It creates a private Wi-Fi network for your livestream. The hardware runs $100 to $450 depending on the model, with battery life of 8 to 13 hours. It takes a standard SIM from a normal carrier, the same as a phone, but usually on a data-only plan since there's no calling or texting involved.

    • Pros:

      • You can connect several phones, cameras, mics, and any other equipment that needs internet to the MiFi modem. This is useful if you're running a multicam setup or need more than one piece of gear online at once.

      • A dedicated MiFi keeps your phone free to do its own job, so you don't have to use your phone as a hotspot. Running your phone as a hotspot drains its battery fast.

  • Cons:

    • Cell data plans typically cap hotspot data at 15GB to 50GB per billing cycle, roughly 5 to 25 hours of livestreaming depending on where your plan falls in that range. Once you cross that threshold, the carrier throttles you, and your upload speed drops to 600Kbps to 3Mbps, which is way below the upload speed you need for a livestream.

    • In a crowded area, a MiFi modem behaves exactly like a SIM does. It shares the same cell tower as every phone around it. So even if your modem shows full bars, you can still get a weak, sub-streaming-quality signal underneath.

3. Satellite internet

A compact satellite dish, weighing about 2.4 lbs, that connects directly to satellites instead of cell towers. Starlink Mini is currently the only truly portable, backpack-friendly option.   • Pros:

Power banks are rated on their capacity, measured in mAh. Higher mAh means more stored power, which means you can charge bigger devices, or the same device more times, before the bank itself runs out.

You need roughly 3,000 to 5,000mAh to fully charge a phone, roughly 1,000 to 5,000mAh for a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
